What do you like to do in your spare time?

Hey Reader,

For the longest time, I loathed the question, "What do you like to do in your spare time?"

It seemed like an alien concept.

Because for most of my adult life:

1) What is spare time?

2) What could have been spare time was usually filled with having several jobs and cramming as much personal development as I could.

However, over the last few months, I've been trying to slow down and indulge in simple pleasures, such as:

Catching up on my favorite reality shows, and diving into the world of reading for pleasure (not business, finance, or personal development), but just reading for fun. πŸ“š

I recently finished The Last Mrs. Parrish and I'm currently reading Paris Hilton's memoir.

I only picked up the Paris Hilton book because it came up as a suggestion when the book I actually wanted to read, the Britney Spears memoir, had a lengthy wait time at the library.

To my surprise, delving into this book unearthed some startling revelations about her teenage years that I had no idea about.

Particularly her two-year stint in a "troubled teens" boarding school at the age of 16.

Do you remember the Maury Povich and Sally Jesse Rafael shows of the 90s and early 2000s where they'd show "out of control teens" being plucked in the middle of the night by big, club bouncer looking men, and sent to boarding facilities?

Yep - that's what she experienced.

She shares some deeply harrowing and traumatic things that happened to her during those years.

It definitely sent me down a rabbit hole researching these institutions and the horrendous practices of the "troubled teen" industry.

Many of these schools, including the ones she attended, have since been shut down due to many scandals and emergence of physical and emotional abuse and sexual assault stories from survivors.

I'm about 80% of the way through the book, but so far, have been moving through it pretty quickly.

If you're intrigued, I encourage you to give it a read.

While the first 2-3 pages may seem somewhat airy and ditzy, push through, and you'll find a pretty vulnerable and shocking narrative.

Any opinions you may have drawn about Paris Hilton may change when you read this book.

THINGS TO SHAREπŸ’‘

I've been on a skincare journey the last few years.

Exploring how I can work on improving my actual skin so that I can feel more confident wearing less makeup.

I’m a firm believer that healthy skin is most influenced by diet and lifestyle, and I've seen how my skin has improved over the years from prioritizing these aspects.

A few weeks ago, I put together a Skincare guide that includes all my favorite foods I swear by πŸ₯‘ 🍊+ products for healthy, glowing skin.

Sometimes, it can be easy to become complacent with the routine of day to day life and inadvertently overlook subtle signs of a relationship gradually slipping into mediocrity.

Natasha shares some wisdom and advice on signs to watch out for, and advice for couples to maintain adventure and novelty in their relationship.

Hey Reader, Happy Wednesday and welcome back to an issue of The Brown Girl Podcast newsletter! It's been a long time, 8 months exactly, since I last drafted an email newsletter. Mentally I'm here and ready to dive back into creative outlets (but really, I'm sitting in my room in a hoodie from 15 years ago, drinking coffee, and wondering how it's already fall🍁). One of the things I've learned to appreciate in my 30s is slowing down; going at a pace that feels right for me based on my current...

Hey Reader, Greetings from Bogota, Colombia. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡΄ I'm on vacation this week! It's my first true vacation unplugging (mostly 😬) in a long time. BTW this newsletter was written on the flight, with a few edits in between at a coffee shop, and scheduled for release. While the last 12 months have included a lot of traveling, they've mostly been for work, weddings, family functions, or other obligatory commitments that have made trips feel more fleeting and rushed in nature, so I'm really looking...

Hey Reader, WELCOME⭐️ If you're new to this newsletter, thank you for being here.
